Recurring Missed Coincidence
Layers of darkness cut and carve into blocks of saturated neon colours, while music from pachinko parlors, game arcades, and one million different streetspeaks clamour as one at city’s edge.
He’s standing in front of a Family Mart, drinking tinned chu hai, appreciating the irony of the convenience shop’s name. He watches a trio of love hotel girls work the intersection. They’re targeting salary men on return to downtown, flirting as they thrust discount tickets into their hands and trouser pockets. Sometimes they approach the young and drunk, but not nearly as often – more profit to purse with lovers you know are in a hurry get home.
Just then his mobile goes off. A call from the Tank-man, says he’s in the area. Has a friend with him. Wanna get together? Sure, why not? Anywhere better than nowhere alone.
So they agree: half an hour. In front of Ikebukuro Station.
See you then.
